At the end of the year – amongst the retrospective lists that catalogue the best movies, media moments, albums, and whatever – is the who’s who of what words made it into the dictionary.  But little thought of are the words that are taken out.  The makers of the Oxford English Dictionary have created a fantastic website Save The Words which feature words that are in peril (apparently microreader and 10-cent store on on their way out) and encourages people to sign up by pledging to use them in conversation in order to save them.  It’s very well done – simple, clean, beautiful, fun, with great navigation.

But because I love you…I had to take a moment to share.

Aptly titled: Don’t ask a designer for a favor.

Update: Aw…come on. It’s down already? Must be the tens of people I drove there.

HAH. Still had a tab open with the post. Here you go:

The old design/solution adage has been broken – they have built a better mousetrap.

One of the gold award winners at this year’s International Design Excellence Awards was a mousetrap called OneDown. It essentially looks like a lovely vase that the mouse crawls into (there wasn’t an explanation of why a mouse would be attracted to crawling in there), and the receptacle swings upright from the weight of the mouse.

There’s no snapping parts, the mouse doesn’t die, it’s not ugly, and it doesn’t smell.

I guess there’s always a better way.

Super-interesting piece that discusses linear morality models and choices in game design. I made that sound boring as hell…but it’s great. Check it out.

On a scale from Very Trustworthy to Disastrous…here’s what your hirsute face says about you.

I love that John Waters is between Werewolf and Hitler.

I can’t find the link where I got this from…I’ll keep looking…

Update: Found it!

More mesmerizing Phantom camera goodness. This bit is an exercise in only-the-artist-knows, but a wonderful 3-minute Zen break nevertheless. Love the Stephen Hawking voiceover, the monochromatic color palettes, and the non-sequiturness of it all.

NextRound has collected their favorite 15 Venn Diagrams as of late. (They claim that these explain the internet…sure…but they don’t at all.) Here’s a few of my favorites from their list:

….the Twins….the Twins!

It’s a salad of Tim Burton and Jean-Pierre Jeunet with a touch of Edward Gorey dressing.

I’d like this doormat please:

Supposedly you can buy it at Target. So it’s additionally appropriate. (Those of you who know, know why.)

Pentagram, the always amazing design firm, has been coming up with interesting, intelligent, and non-holiday-centric holiday cards, websites, books, and experiences for the past I-don’t-know-years. This year’s is a fun twist on the Personality Quiz by categorizing you as a TypeFace. The execution is simple and in good style, and the end result is a nice mini-tutorial on typeface. When you go to the URL – you’ll need the password: character.

And in case you were wondering, I’m Archer Hairline – the culmination of my emotional, understated, progressive, and disciplined personality.  As if you didn’t know.
